The aim of the memorial park is to create a strong connection with the park between nature.
Pavilions for programs of Memorial center and the Culture and Art Village introduces new dimensions aimed at understanding the rich cultural history in the site and enjoying the new greenspace.

CULTURE AND ART VILLAGE

Palimpsest (trace - excavation)

The village formed residences for newcomers who moved in for work at the nearby shipyard during the colonial period at the beginning of the 20th century. Only the traces of this are left at the site.
The new site is being adapted to be used differently for the residents and artists without disrupting the tracks of historical sites, the goals is to reinterpret and reform the historic sites to the new urban typology.

Most of the public and cultural spaces such as  Art/Fabrication center , Housing for artist, Art studio, exhibition gallery, Library, Guesthouses, Art & Design Store and the Gallery café were constructed from the Culture and Art street from JEONGNA-DONG Community center, along the Saecheonnyeon road, to the volunteer fire department in the west.
The existing bathhouse was renovated to an art studio and a gallery which retains fun memories about the past role of this building.
The Car repair shop is made into an Art fabrication center for artists, a space that retains most of the shapes from past.
The middle yard becomes a parvis where it joins the Culture and Art street, art store in the glass box form is cocooned under the reused roof.

Reconstruction for existing residents

The residential areas are composed of proposed newly built houses to provide a better living environment for existing residents without disturbing the urban morphology.
There are individual gardens and sloped roofs to keep the ridge height.

Cohabitation / Independent functions

Link with a common planning landscape
The Parvis, Culture and Art street and the community square are next to the Community center for residents. This promotes access to various art programs and public spaces.
At the community square the space is shared for activities and events for the residents and visitors. (flea market , art shopping, cultural events etc…) In this effort the programs foster and link the relationship between the residents, visitors and artists.
It gives chance for the public to experience art and also gives local artists chance to exhibit murals and art installations in public spaces. The mixed programs continue into the art studio with an exhibition space also has a rooftop terrace and a gallery café open to public.

Independent functions
The art / fabrication center and the independent artist work spaces are linked with a temporary habitation (renovated old house + large terrace) for artists where artists can meet.

Cohabitation
There are 12 studios of 19m² per person located on a quiet pathway. They are furnished with a kitchenettes and bathrooms to keep the residents privacy.
A shared space ( 50m² kitchen and Livingroom) with a shared garden (130m²) is renovated from an old house for meeting and events between residents

Housing
The 8 individual houses (65m² - 90m²) with a garden are made for the existing residents.
(multi family households) Each houses are morphologically and can be functioned differently according to the personality of the occupants.
Located east side, alleys are distanced with the public garden strip and the guesthouse on the street in relation to the public space to keep the privacy.

PLAN RDJ

YISABU DOKDO MEMORIAL PARK

Sailing in the nature

The aim of the memorial park is to create a strong connection with the park between nature.
Pavilions for programs of Memorial center and the Culture and Art Village introduces new dimensions aimed at understanding the rich cultural history in the site and enjoying the new greenspace.

The new park creates programs for various activities and events and turns the pavilions into a new destination and an attractive gathering place where both visitors and residents can experience the cultural history in greenspace.

This site is situated in an important connecting point between cultural and historical attraction around the city, such as Osip Stream, Obun Port, the departure port for Yisabu, and urban regeneration projects for tourist attractions such as Samcheok Port, Naritgol Village, deserted factory and shipyard site etc.….

Our challenge is to develop with the greenspaces from Mt.Yukhyang to combine with future plots that are industrial areas today.
We aim to create an open public space to welcome visitors and residens to Samcheok.

We replaced the existing road in the site with a new continuous promenade from the outside in to the memorial center.
This allows visitors to discover the history, they can enjoy reading books, drinking a cup of coffee. And this promenade connects with the culture and art village so that visitors and residents can look at artworks and go to the cultural events while walking around or taking a break in the park.

The façade envelope is inspired by the traditional and modern roofs around the site and the typology of ships.
The enveloped form and the use of timbers gives not only a harmony with the surroundings but also a coherence of the architectural typology between the Memorial park and the Culture and Art Village.
Furthermore, we can feel the wave movements of the sea through the facade by twisted timbers. Finally, visitors are able to enjoy the park-life in immersed nature and cozy atmosphere.

Sailing to discovery the nature of Dockdo and its history

We wanted to design the Memorial Center surrounded in a greenspace, Dockdo resides in an unique untouched ecosystem and this natural atmosphere was the theme we emphasized which is the importance of nature of Dockdo and its history.

The exhibition spaces, cafeteria and book-cafe are located along the promenade that continues from the outside. The grand atrium space is enclosed in a greenhouse.
Through the promenade, visitors can sail to discover the history and the nature of Dockdo. The Promenade is also a place where visitors and residents to gather around or to rest.

The exhibition of the ecosystem of dockdo, we designed an aquarium so the visitors can experience numerous underwater creatures of Dockdo.

These features of Memorial Center with the Park and the Culture and Art Village will attract visitors and enrich the resident's life.
